DESCRIPTION:This is the first of two introductory talks on the modular rep
 resentation theory of finite group algebras. After briefly introducing p-m
 odular systems\, we will review basic properties of algebras over complete
  discrete valuations rings as far as needed to describe some of the classi
 c material on blocks of finite group algebras\, much of which is due to Br
 auer and Green. This includes the notions of defect groups\, the Brauer co
 rrespondence\, relative projectivity\, and the Green correspondence. We de
 scribe how to associate fusion systems to blocks\, based on work of Alperi
 n and Broue.
