DESCRIPTION:The directed propulsion of small scale objects in water is\npr
oblematic because of the combination of low Reynolds number and\nBrownian
motion on these length scales. One possibility for designing\npropulsion i
s to devise non-reciprocal deformation strategies that\nare simple enough
to be realizable. Another strategy could be to take\nadvantage of various
phoretic phenomena. In this seminar\, a number of\nsimple models from each
category will be introduced and the experimental\nrealization of one of t
hese devices at Sheffield and another one in Barcelona\nwill be reported t
ogether with the quantitative analysis of the \nobserved motion.
