DESCRIPTION:Spherical buildings are certain geometrical structures canonic
ally associated with a large class of simple groups. In this talk we will
describe buildings purely in graph theoretical terms and give a brief over
view of Tits’s classification results for spherical buildings. Time per
mitting\, we will also make a few remarks about the Bruhat-Tits classifica
tion of affine buildings and its connection to the theory of absolutely si
mple algebraic groups defined over a local field.
