DESCRIPTION:Natural Language Processing (NLP) - a branch of Artificial Int
elligence (AI) - focuses on the automated analysis and understanding of hu
man language by machines. NLP in health promises to support knowledge disc
overy about drugs\, aid clinical diagnosis and enhance early detection of
disease outbreaks. However key problems remain to be solved. In this talk
\, Dr Collier will review current technologies before going on to provide
insights into some of the linguistic and technical issues that make unders
tanding the language of health so challenging for AI. He will focus in par
ticular on the Voice of the Patient - the often colloquial language that p
atients use to describe their own conditions in social media and forums.
