f native woodlands to inform present and future woodland conservation mana
gement strategies in Northern Scotland - Jasmijn Sybenga (University of th

DESCRIPTION:This research investigates three areas within the Flow Country
in northern Scotland under the care of Forestry and Land Scotland. Palaeo
ecological research of these areas using pollen\, non-pollen palynomorphs
and microscopic charcoal has been undertaken in order to identify the nati
ve woodland that was once present in these areas. Causes for the demise of
these woodlands and evidence of past woodland disturbances\, such as thos
e caused by people and climate will be explored and the results of the wor
k are modelled against future predicted climate change in order to identif
y what native woodland and/or tree types offer the best chance for establi
shment through re-afforestation of these areas in the future. This researc
h highlights the importance of using past vegetation studies and past wood
land management for present and future woodland conservation.
