DESCRIPTION:Prof. Croft is Head of Dept. of Infectious and Tropical Diseas
es in London School of\nHygiene and Tropical medicine\, University of Lond
on. He was R & D Director at the\nDrugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative
(DNDi) in Geneva from 2004 to 2007.\n\nThis year\, DNDi and the World Heal
th Organization (WHO) again urged the G8\ngovernments to support research
 & development for the so-called neglected diseases.\nNew and better-adapte
d treatments are desperately needed for diseases that impact\nmillions of
lives\, yet they are neglected by the global public health agenda. That\ns
tatement called upon the world's wealthiest nations to "commit resources f
or ..\nsustainable financial mechanisms to .. support innovation required
to meet the priority\nhealth needs of developing countries" (see http://ww
w.dndi.org/ for full text). Why\nhave these diseases been so neglected? Wh
y are they primarily diseases of poverty?\nAnd what new initiatives are sp
ringing up to address this neglect? This talk will look\nat the problem fr
om many angles: biological sciences\, economics\, clinical medicine\,\nimp
lementation and ethics – with a dose of pragmatism in a complex world.\n
\nThe seminar will be followed by discussion and wine.
