DESCRIPTION:At this session of the NLIP Reading Group we'll be discussing
the following paper:\n\nTony Veale and Yanfen Hao. 2008. "A Fluid Knowledg
e Representation for Understanding and Generating Creative Metaphors":http
://aclweb.org/anthology-new/C/C08/C08-1119.pdf. In Proceedings of the 22nd
International Conference on Computational Linguistics (COLING-08).\n\n*Ab
stract:*\nCreative metaphor is a phenomenon that stretches and bends the c
onventions of semantic description\, often to humorous and poetic extremes
. The computational modeling of metaphor thus requires a knowledge represe
ntation that is just as stretchable and semantically accommodating. We pre
sent here a flexible knowledge representation for metaphor interpretation
and generation\, called Talking Points\, and describe\nhow talking points
can be acquired on a large scale from WordNet (Fellbaum\,1998) and from th
e web. We show how talking points can be fluidly connected to form a slipn
et\, and demonstrate that talking points provide an especially concise rep
 resentation for concepts in general.
