DESCRIPTION:The growth in the use of composite materials\, and the develop
ment of more reliable bonding techniques\, has led to a desire to reduce t
he weight of composite structures by using adhesive bonding. However\, th
e integrity of an as-manufactured bonded joint\, and the in-service perfor
mance of such a joint\, is difficult to monitor. The use of embedded optic
al sensors based on chirped fibre Bragg gratings (CFBGs) will be described
\, a method which enables both poor adhesive bonds to be detected and the
initiation and growth of fatigue damage (in the form of disbonding - also
 called delamination) to be monitored.
