DESCRIPTION:The suggestion that the formation of structure on cosmological
 ly small\nscales can backreact on the evolution of the Universe as a whole
  has\ngained considerable attention recently. We argue that\, to settle th
 is\nissue\, an averaging procedure is required which is capable of averagi
 ng\ntensor quantities in a generally covariant way. We discuss in depth\nv
 arious approaches to such a procedure\, and remaining problems which need\
 nto be addressed.
