round 30 km beneath our feet lies the Earth's mantle\, a 2\,900 km thick l
ayer of rock that makes up the majority of the mass of our planet. While s
olid for the most part\, the Earth's mantle is able flow on geological tim
e scales by thermally-activated creep processes. One obvious manifestation
of this flow is the large-scale motion of the tectonic plates at the surf
ace\; but there are also smaller and deeper scales of mantle flow that are
much harder to observe. In this talk I will show how state-of-the-art geo
physical observations and models are leading to new insights into the myst
erious dynamics of the Earth's deep interior.
