DESCRIPTION:To book an in-person seat at the seminar this Thursday please
use the link below - please note that once the number is reached you will
not be able to register but will be able to watch via the Zoom link at the
bottom of this email. There will also be a selection of individually wra
pped sandwich lunches for everyone who is attending in-person.\n\nhttps://
 stokes.cceif.group.cam.ac.uk:1763/seminarreg/162010\n\nFace coverings are
expected to be worn on arrival at the BPI Institute AND during the seminar
and in all communal areas. Face coverings should only be removed once you
have collected lunch and are back at your seat. Please also note that for
ventilation windows in the Open Plan Area must remain open at all times.\
n\n\nFusion is the process that powers our Sun and the stars. The principl
e is rather simple: fuse two nuclei together and release energy in the pro
cess. This energy can then be used to power a steam turbine and generate e
lectricity like in any power plant. The benefits are enormous: a carbon-fr
ee reaction\, no long-lived radioactive waste\, and a virtually limitless
fuel…\n\nWhere is the catch? Where are all the nuclear fusion power plan
ts?\n \nThe truth is that mastering fusion is extremely difficult. The phy
sical and technological challenges are numerous: the fuel must be heated u
p to millions of degrees\, the reactor components must withstand extreme p
article fluxes and heat loads\, potentially radioactive material must be h
andled with care\, the very hot fuel must be contained inside the reactor
vessel…\n\n\nIn this seminar\, we will humbly try to tackle some of thes
e challenges by building a fusion reactor component by component. We will
have an overview of the existing and future fusion devices around the worl
 d.\n\nTo attend via Zoom:\n\nTime: Nov 4\, 2021 11:15 AM London\n\nJoin Zo
 om Meeting\nhttps://zoom.us/j/93966922478\n\nMeeting ID: 939 6692 2478\n\n
To attend the meeting\, just open the meeting link in e.g.\, a web browser
\, which\, if you have not already installed Zoom\, will start a download
and the quick installation of a small client will be necessary. If you alr
eady have Zoom\, you already know what to do - and the link can be entered
as the message ID.\n\nThe link will be live from 11.15am. By default you
will be muted and not emitting video\, so remember to unmute yourself befo
 re asking questions. \n
