DESCRIPTION:The local Langlands correspondence is more than a bijective\nc
orrespondence: it promises an extensive dictionary between the\nrepresenta
tion theory of reductive p-adic groups and the arithmetic of\ntheir L-para
meters. One entry in this dictionary is a conjectural\nformula of Hiraga\,
  Ichino\, and Ikeda for the size of a discrete series\nrepresentation -- i
ts "formal degree" -- in terms of a gamma factor of\nits L-parameter. In t
his talk\, I'll explain why the conjecture is true\nfor almost all supercu
spidal representations. Time permitting\, I'll\nalso compute the sign of t
he gamma factor\, verifying a conjecture of\nGross and Reeder.
