DESCRIPTION:I describe recent work that clarifies the extent to which the
\nevolution of self-gravitating discs can be can be modeled using a\npseu
do-viscous description\, discussing the extent to which the local\nthermal
properties of the disc can be used to predict the onset of\nfragmentation
\, the timescale of secular evolution and the amplitude \nof spiral modes.
In particular\, I shall explore how the latter affects \nthe ability of d
ust to collect in short-lived spiral features and\, using\nrealistic estim
ates of cooling rates in protostellar discs\, assess the\nprospects for th
e formation of planetesimals in the early\, self-gravitating\nphases of di
 sc evolution.
