DESCRIPTION:The Deligne-Mumford compactification Mbar_{g\,n} of the moduli
  space of smooth marked curves is smooth with normal crossing boundary. In
  order to get an insight into its birational geometry\, we may construct s
 everal different modular compactifications. I will discuss the geometry of
  isolated curve singularities of genus two\, and one way of using them to 
 replace genus two subcurves with few special points.
