DESCRIPTION:Years ago Daniel Gorenstein began a project for giving an outl
in of the ("original") proof of the classification of the finite simple gr
 oups---\npublishing in 1982 a general introduction\, and in 1983 \nan outl
ine of the classification of groups of non-characteristic 2 type.\n\nBut h
e could not outline the characteristic 2 type case\,\nin view of the non-p
ublication of Mason's expected treatment of the quasithin groups. \nThis
gap was finally filled by the Aschbacher-Smith \nvolumes published in 2004
. In particular\nthis cleared the way for completing Gorenstein's project
.\n\nThe talk will describe such a work in progress (status: first draft c
 ompleted) by Aschbacher\, Lyons\, Smith\, and Solomon.\n\nThe discussion w
ill be expository\, indicating some underlying principles (a few of which
have been emerging in retrospect).\nThere will be some mention of improvem
ents since the\noriginal proof\, and later/future possible alternative app
 roaches.\n
