DESCRIPTION:Structured representations are a powerful tool in machine lear
 ning\, in \nparticular for natural language: The discrete\, compositional 
 nature of \nwords and sentences leads to natural combinatorial representat
 ions such \nas trees\, sequences\, segments\, or alignments\, among others
 . Such \nrepresentations are at odds with deep neural networks\, which \nc
 onventionally perform smooth\, soft computations\, learning dense\, \ninsc
 rutable hidden representations.\n\nWe present SparseMAP\, a strategy for i
 nferring differentiable \ncombinatorial latent structures\, alleviating th
 e tension between \ndiscrete and continuous representations through sparsi
 ty. SparseMAP \ncomputes a globally-optimal combination of a very small nu
 mber of \nstructures\, and can be extended to arbitrary factor graphs \n(L
 P-SparseMAP)\, only requiring access to local maximization oracles. Our \n
 strategy is fully deterministic and compatible with familiar \ngradient-ba
 sed methods for training neural networks. We demonstrate \nsparse and stru
 ctured neural hidden layers\, with successful empirical \nresults and visu
 alization properties.\n\nBio:\nVlad Niculae is an assistant professor in t
 he Language Technology Lab\, at the Informatics Institute (IvI)\, Universi
 ty of Amsterdam. His research is on machine learning for natural language 
 processing\, focusing on sparsity\, structure\, and optimization. He obtai
 ned his PhD in 2018 from Cornell University\, advised by Claire Cardie\, a
 nd did a postdoc at the Instituto de Telecomunicações in Lisbon. Vlad is
  an ELLIS Scholar and a member of the Amsterdam ELLIS unit.\n\n\nGeorgi Ka
