DESCRIPTION:Today's wireless networks enable and enhance an assortment of\
napplications such as video on demand\, file backup\, and voice\ntelephony
. Yet when wireless is stretched past its limits\, users\nexperience garb
led pictures\, unavailable file servers\, and voice\nglitches. Why does t
his happen? There are two primary reasons: the\nhighly dynamic nature of
the wireless channel\, and the fundamentally\nshared nature of the RF medi
um. Using an expanded interface to the\nphysical layer (PHY) called the S
oftPHY interface\, I will describe how\nthe PHY can pass information up to
higher layers. This allows bit\nrate adaptation to better address the fi
rst challenge\, and medium\naccess control to better address the second.\n
\nHaving shown two ways of mitigating these wireless challenges\, I will\n
then present ongoing software radio-based work which seeks to\nleverage a
desirable feature: the diversity of paths over which a\nwireless signal tr
avels.\n\nJoint work with Hari Balakrishnan and Mythili Vutukuru.\n\nBio:
Kyle Jamieson is Lecturer of Networks at University College London.\nHe re
ceived the Ph.D. in June\, 2008 from the Massachusetts Institute\nof Techn
ology in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. His research interests are\nin design
ing real-world wireless systems that cut across the boundary\nof digital c
 ommunications and networking.\n
