DESCRIPTION:We know that music can evoke and regulate emotions\, but its c
apability to influence conscious thought is yet to be systematically explo
red. Although some mental phenomena such as music-evoked autobiographical
memories have received much attention from researchers\, very little is kn
own about other types of internally-oriented cognition\, such as mind-wand
ering and visual mental imagery. In this talk I will (1) illustrate the re
levance of these types of cognition for musical context\, (2) present nove
l findings showing a strong relationship with emotion\, and (3) highlight
relevant implications for mental health and well-being.
