SUMMARY:Turbulent boundary layers and the quest for high Reynolds numbers
 - Henrik Alfredsson\, Professor of Fluid Physics\, Department of Mechanics
 \, KTH\, Stockholm\, Sweden

DESCRIPTION:The talk will include a presentation of fluid mechanics and re
lated\nresearch at KTH\, which is both fundamental and applied in nature.\
nAn example of the latter is the research within the CICERO Centre\,\nwhic
h deals with the gas management of internal combustion engines. The\nsecon
d part of the talk will deal with high-Reynolds-number turbulent\nwall-bou
nded flows\, describing some considerations that have to be taken\ninto ac
count in order to conduct 'good' high-Reynolds-number\nexperiments. These
considerations will be exemplified with a new high-Reynolds-number\nfacili
ty presently being built in Italy (CICLoPE). A major international\ncollab
oration will also be described\, where turbulent boundary-layer\nmeasureme
nts taken in wind tunnels on three different continents have\nbeen made by
multiple research groups. The purpose of these experiments\nis to elucida
te the accuracy that can be obtained by different\ngroups and how accurate
ly different wind tunnels can reproduce the same\nflow field.
