DESCRIPTION:Rapid progress in additive manufacturing has resulted in creat
 ion of three dimensional micro-architected materials with a range of engin
 eering applications. One of their current limitations is understanding the
  tolerance to damage and defect\, and whether continuum theories of elasti
 c fracture mechanics are applicable. In this combined experimental and num
 erical investigation\, we not only revise the standard testing protocols b
 ut also provide a design protocol for mechanical metamaterials using "fail
 ure maps". These findings represent a step towards developing a continuum 
 theory for the failure of this emerging class of solids.
