DESCRIPTION:Professor Jim Secord and Professor John Parker will consider D
arwin's specimens in a global context. His collections were part of a riv
er of specimens that flowed into Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries\,
resulting in evolutionary controversy that emerged in the new media of the
first great age of global communication. Debates about 'Darwinism' becam
e central to economic and intellectual modernisation. Was it possible to
adopt the economic benefits of science\, without adopting its potential co
 nsequences for traditional religion?
