DESCRIPTION:The theme of this lecture will be the global properties of per
iod mappings with applications to compactifications of moduli spaces. Give
 n a variation of Hodge structure over a smooth quasi-projective variety B\
, we will define and discuss properties of maximal and minimal extensions
$\\Phi_T$ and $\\Phi_S$ of the corresponding period mapping $\\Phi$. Of pa
rticular interest will be the fibration over the divisor at infinity of th
e images of $\\Phi_T$ and $\\Phi_S$ in which the rich geometry of the exte
nsion date of limiting mixed Hodge structures will be analyzed. The genera
l theory will then be illustrated for the boundary of the moduli space of
one particularly interesting algebraic surface.\n*Joint work with Mark Gre
 en and Colleen Robles
