DESCRIPTION:A connectome of the Drosophila central nervous system will soo
n be available. The challenge now is to use this information—together wi
th genetically targeted physiology and perturbation—to understand the ne
ural basis of sophisticated behaviors. I briefly discuss the generation of
the connectome as an example of “big science” with striking similarit
ies to earlier efforts to sequence genomes. I will then provide some take
home lessons from Drosophila that illustrate the value of connectome-level
information. Finally\, I will describe our ongoing studies of aggressive
behaviors in the fly and how we hope to gain mechanistic insights into per
sistent changes in internal brain state\, context dependent gating of visu
al information\, and goal directed decision making.\n
