DESCRIPTION:The concept of magnetic "flux tubes" as isolated cylindrical m
agnetic entities has been instrumental in our intuition pertaining to the
origins of solar magnetic observations.&nbsp\; However\, magnetic fields a
re generally space-filling and the so-called "flux tubes" are really conce
ntrations of field and are not isolated entities in a field-free backgroun
d.&nbsp\; We examine the effects of this difference\, and\, in particular\
, find a simple new effect that can explain (or perhaps contribute to the
explanation of) many aspects of the recent observations of solar helicity.
