DESCRIPTION:The infant gut microbiome develops remarkably predictably\, wi
th pioneer species rapidly colonizing the gut after birth\, followed by an
ordered succession of other microbes. The gut microbiota is vital to infa
nt health\, yet to date the forces that drive these predictable microbiome
dynamics have remained largely unknown. Here I will discuss our recent wo
rk\, first identifying the specific microbial interactions driving microbi
ome assembly within one particular infant cohort\, then identifying genera
l ecological rules governing microbiome assembly more broadly.
