DESCRIPTION:The study of nonlinear oscillator chains in classical many-bod
y dynamics has a storied history going back to the seminal work of Fermi e
t al. I will introduce a family of new models which consist of chains of N
harmonically coupled particles. The nonlinearity is introduced by confini
ng each individual particle inside a prescribed domain. The local dynamics
is made of a billiard problem.\nThose chains exhibit a mixed phase space
for any finite value of the number of particles (or sites) for the simples
t choice of the billiard (a one-dimensional box). In the continuum limit\,
this case constitutes a singular limit of the integrable sinh Gordon fiel
d theory.\nIn this talk I will present the model and discuss its main ther
 modynamic properties.
