DESCRIPTION:Network anomalies that significantly reduce end-to-end perform
ance are some of the most\nnotable of the Internet’s growing pains. Rout
er misconfigurations\, power outages\, fiber cuts and\nslow convergence of
interdomain routing are just a few of the problems causing end-to-end\npa
th disruptions. Despite their importance to network operators and users\,
determining the\nexistence and impact of such network problems remains a c
hallenge.\nIn this talk\, I will present a participatory approach to detec
ting\, isolating and reporting network\nanomalies and describe its realiza
tion in NEWS – the Network Early Warning System. Our\napproach is motiva
ted by the observation that\, collectively\, peers in large-scale peer-to-
peer\nsystems provide a unique and important perspective on network condit
ions – one to which\ntoday’s researchers\, network operators and indiv
idual users have limited or no access. Our\nsolution relies on passive mon
itoring of the natural P2P traffic to efficiently collect views of\nnetwor
k performance and uses corroboration to confidently detect anomalies. NEWS
is\ncurrently available as a plugin for the popular Vuze BitTorrent clien
t and has been installed in\nover 28\,000 hosts since its release in March
2008.\n\nBio: Fabián Bustamante is an associate professor in the EECS De
partment at Northwestern\nUniversity. He joined Northwestern in 2002\, aft
er receiving his M.S. and Ph.D. from the College\nof Computing at Georgia
Tech. Fabián is a recipient of the US National Science Foundation\nCAREER
award and the E.T.S. Watson Fellowship Award from the Science Foundation
of Ireland.\nHe is the head of the AquaLab group\, which researches system
s issues in large-scale distributed\ncomputing. For more detailed informat
