DESCRIPTION:Usual parameterizations of mixing in global models quantify in
dependently the contribution of internal tides -- generated by barotropic
flows -- and lee waves -- generated by quasi-steady flows -- relying on a
linear approach. However the combined effects of the tidal and quasi-stead
y flows causes a linear coupling between internal tides and lee waves that
has been overlooked in internal wave mixing parameterizations over the la
st decades. \n\nLaboratory experiments have confirmed the dynamical effect
s of this linear coupling on internal wave propagation and energy fluxes b
ased on high resolution density measurements with the Light Attenuation Te
chnique (LAT). Moreover\, strong nonlinear processes such as the formation
of periodic vortices have been measured in the bottom boundary layer. I w
ill present the main results of this experimental campaign and discuss the
ir implications for the parameterization of internal wave induced mixing a
 t the oceanic scale.
