SUMMARY:Hitchhikers guide to machine learning - Christopher M. Bishop (Mic
 rosoft Research\, Cambridge)

UID:TALK18595@talks.cam.ac.uk
CONTACT:Dr Fabien Petitcolas
DESCRIPTION:*Abstract*: Some of the most promising research opportunities
lie at the intersections of different fields. As a small step in this dire
ction\, Chris will give a short introductory tutorial to the field of mach
ine learning. The focus will be on the underlying concepts\, illustrated w
ith simple examples\, and the mathematical content will be kept to a minim
um. This talk will assume no previous knowledge of machine learning.\n\n*B
iography*: Chris Bishop is Chief Research Scientist at Microsoft Research
Cambridge\, and Professor of Computer Science at the University of Edinbur
gh. He is also a Fellow of Darwin College Cambridge\, a Fellow of the Roya
l Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. H
is research interests include probabilistic approaches to machine learning
\, as well as their application to fields such as computer vision and biom
edical science. In 2008 he presented the prestigious Royal Institution Chr
istmas Lectures\, broadcast at prime time on UK national television.\n
