DESCRIPTION:*Abstract*: This session will look at how to make supervision 
 work well for you. It will argue that to get the most out of your relation
 ship with your supervisor you will need to be proactive and assertive. In 
 particular the session will encourage you to think about the following iss
 ues:\n\n* The relative rights and responsibilities of the supervisor and s
 upervisee\; \n* What your supervisor cares about and how you can move up i
 n their priorities\; \n* Strategies that you can use to manage the supervi
 sion and make them more useful\; \n* What to do if things go wrong. \n\n*B
 iography*: Tennie Videler is a programme manager for Vitae\, an organisati
 on set up to support postgraduate researchers and research staff. Before t
 hat she was a researcher herself\, completing a PhD and a dozen years of p
 ost-doctoral research in different fields of structural biology. Tennie jo
 ined Vitae last year and is the person dedicated to making contact with re
 searchers\, both postgraduates and research staff. She writes and commissi
 on resources for researchers and attend events where she meets researchers
  and staff who support them. She is also involved in some research\, such 
 as the latest issue of ‘What Do PhDs do?’ on the first employment dest
 inations of PhD graduates\, which is currently underway.\n
