DESCRIPTION:*Abstract*: The research of the Cambridge Systems and Networki
 ng group at Microsoft Research Cambridge\, covers the broad span of system
 s and networks research\, ranging from improving the performance of indivi
 dual computers through to designing novel distributed systems that can sca
 le to hundreds of thousand of hosts. I will give an overview of this multi
 -disciplinary group that designs and builds systems\, analyses them\, and 
 uses them.\n\n*Biography*: Tim Harris is a researcher at Microsoft Researc
 h Cambridge (UK) where he works with the Cambridge Systems & Networking Gr
 oup\, the Programming Principles and Tools Group\, and the BSC-Microsoft J
 oint Research Centre. His main research interests are in the design and im
 plementation of programming languages and managed runtime environments to 
 support multi-threaded and multi-processor software. \n
