DESCRIPTION:One of the many insights provided by Givental is that complica
ted relationships in Gromov-Witten theory can often be expressed as simple
linear symplectic transformations of a certain symplectic vector space. I
will explain this approach and briefly touch on some past and ongoing wor
k which fits in this framework\, relating to the abelian/non-abelian corre
spondence and the crepant transformation conjecture.
