DESCRIPTION:Ontologies and ontology based systems are becoming increasingl
y\nimportant in meeting the demand for more powerful and flexible\ninforma
tion systems. Requirements for such systems include the need to\ndeal with
  incomplete and semi-structured information\, to integrate\ninformation fr
om heterogeneous sources\, to employ richer and more\nflexible schemas\, a
nd for query answers to reflect both knowledge and\ndata. Provision of suc
 h enhanced capabilities must\, however\, be in\naddition to\, and not inst
 ead of\, the well-established features of\nexisting database systems\, in
particular their robust\nscalability. Achieving this is\, of course\, extr
emely challenging. In\nthis talk I will present some recent research effor
ts that tackle this\nproblem\, including investigations of tractable fragm
ents\, new\nalgorithmic techniques\, new optimisations and the exploitatio
 n of\nrelational database technology.\n
