DESCRIPTION:The 20 yr-long global and continuous monitoring of geomagnetic
  variations by satellites has given access to a wealth of intriguing rapid
  signals in the interannual time scale range. In this presentation I will 
 summarise recent numerical modelling advances that have enabled the simula
 tion of such variations within a self-sustained convective dynamo of typic
 ally significantly longer (secular) time scales. I will present recent wor
 k that links these geomagnetic variations (and the associated geomagnetic 
 jerks) to the propagation of rapid hydromagnetic waves in Earth&rsquo\;s c
 ore.
