DESCRIPTION:The strength of the geomagnetic field has decreased rapidly ov
er the past two centuries\, coinciding with an increasing field asymmetry
due to the growth of the South Atlantic Anomaly. Here\, I will present a n
ew geomagnetic field model based on archaeomagnetic and sedimentary palaeo
magnetic data over the past 9000 years that shows quasiperiodic variations
in the dipole moment that are linked to similar (recurrent) East-West fie
ld asymmetries. I will also show new analyses of independent cosmogenic ra
dionuclide records that both support these observations and provide new in
formation on North-South asymmetries in the geomagnetic field.
