DESCRIPTION:Earth&rsquo\;s magnetic field has left a signature of its prop
erties in rocks as they have formed at the surface through the last 3.5 bi
llion years. Strong variations in paleomagnetic field behaviour evident on
timescales exceeding ten million years have the potential to elucidate co
re and mantle processes through their impact on time-averaged outer core c
onvection. Here I will report on efforts led by the DEEP (Determining Eart
h Evolution from Palaeomagnetism) group at Liverpool to realize this poten
tial through obtaining and collating palaeomagnetic measurements and captu
ring and reproducing these datasets in global models of outer core convect
ion. Recent insights into such globally significant events as the near col
lapse at the end of the Precambrian will be outlined.
