CONTACT:Prof. Jerome Neufeld
DESCRIPTION:I will review some examples of why different kinds of probabil
ity distributions emerge in Earth observations\, and moreover how leveragi
ng such distributions can be useful. Examples will include ocean turbulenc
e and biogeochemistry\, lake morphometry\, and paleoclimate\, and span fro
m simple and classical probability distributions such as the log-normal to
complex and unfamiliar distributions such as those arising from fractiona
 l Brownian motion.
