DESCRIPTION:Nondestructive characterization of microstructure in polycryst
alline media is highly desirable. Mathematical models of wave propagation
and material statistics can be used to invert microstructural data from ul
trasonic data. This presentation provides an overview of the existing mode
ls to describe scattering in polycrystals. In particular\, the use of spat
ial correlation functions (SCFs)\, which describe how microscopic variable
s at random sites are correlated\, is discussed. Typical SCF forms in rela
tion to ultrasonic scattering measurements are described along with recent
  advances in semi-analytical approaches.
