DESCRIPTION:\nI discuss the formulation of individual-based models as mast
 er\nequations\, which allows use to be made of well-established methods fr
 om\nthe theory of these equations to analyse their behaviours. In many cas
 es\nlarge and well-defined stochastic cycles arise\, even though the\ncorr
 esponding deterministic equations predict the system will approach a\nfixe
 d point. The relation of these so-called quasi-cycles to limit\ncycles is 
 described as are the existence of quasi-cycles about limit\ncycles.\n
