DESCRIPTION:A multimodal formulation of the wave propagation in heterogene
 ous media will be presented\, that allows us to solve complex scattering p
 roblems by arbitrary shaped penetrable scatterers. Using a modal expansion
  of the wavefield (in a domain bounded by various possible conditions)\, t
 he problem reduces to a set of first order coupled equations for the modal
  components of the field. The numerical solution of these equations will b
 e presented and discussed\, as well as the possibilities it offers to solv
 e complex scattering problems. The case of disordered media\, made of a la
 rge number of scatterers\, will notably be analyzed and illustrated.
