DESCRIPTION:The dynamo instability has been observed experimentally in a t
 urbulent\nswirling flow of liquid sodium\, driven by the counter rotation 
 of two\ndisks. In certain regimes\, the magnetic field displays complex dy
 namics\nsuch as random or periodic reversals.\nI will first review the exp
 erimental results and then present a mechanism\nthat explains all the obse
 rved dynamical regimes.\n\nThis mechanism relies on the competition betwee
 n two modes of the magnetic\nfield and also provides a simple explanation 
 of the reversals of Earth's\nmagnetic field\, despite strong differences b
 etween both systems.\nI finally show that hemispherical dynamos are also s
 imply understood in this\nframework.
