DESCRIPTION:Conventional smoothing methods can perform poorly within compl
icated domains where the boundary represents\nsome sort of meaningful barr
ier. In particular it is often important not to `smooth across' boundary f
eatures.\nI discuss the construction of a finite area smoother based on th
e notion of interpolating some boundary\ncondition using a soap film\, and
then allowing the film to distort from its minimum energy configuration t
o\napproximate data. The resulting smooth can be represented using a linea
r basis expansion with quadratic\npenalty\, making it easy to incorporate
as a component of many statistical models.\n
