DESCRIPTION:Motivated by the static patch of de Sitter space\, we discuss 
 timelike surfaces in general relativity and the initial boundary value pro
 blem. We consider the Dirichlet problem and a conformal version thereof. T
 ime permitting we discuss some ideas in lower dimensions -- where we tie t
 he problem to analytical and numerical methods for deformed SYK systems.
