DESCRIPTION:In an increasingly global economy\, with rapidly increasing ra
 tes of technological innovation\, it is ever more important to build indus
 tries based on innovative science and engineering.  The ongoing Emerging I
 ndustries Programme at the Institute for Manufacturing is concerned with u
 nderstanding the translation of scientific ideas into products and service
 s.\n\nThis talk will introduce the programme and will demonstrate how “e
 mergence maps” can depict the growth of existing industries.  The discus
 sion will explore some of the recurring factors that have been found to pr
 omote or inhibit emergence and a preliminary model depicting the processes
