DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\n\nI will give in this mini-course an introd
 uction to large deviation theory and its applications in statistical physi
 cs. I will start in lecture 1 with the basics of the theory as applied to 
 sums of random variables and will then use lectures 2 and 3 to cover appli
 cations related to Markov processes and nonequilibrium systems. The applic
 ations to cover will depend on the audience and\, time permitting\, I migh
 t present some numerical techniques for simulating large deviations and ra
 re events in general.
