SUMMARY:Challenges in capturing transient thermal evolutions in materials
using IR imaging - Janice Barton & Karthik Ramakrishnan\, School of Civil\
, Aerospace and Design Engineering\, University of Bristol

DESCRIPTION:The presentation starts with an overview of progress in using
both photon detector and bolometer IR camera types in capturing transient
thermal evolutions. The prospects for using very low-cost thermal cameras
in material evaluations is discussed in detail. The presentation then move
s on to cover some preliminary work on the application of Telops Fast m3K
infrared photon detector thermal camera for strain energy release rate mea
surement in fibre failure of carbon fibre composites and during high strai
n rate loading. It is shown that thermography can be used to identify the
crack propagation and crack lengths using local changes in temperature nea
r the crack tip in a compact tension specimen.
