DESCRIPTION:We review recent progress in obtaining explicit solutions to t
 he non-linear field equations of some gravitational theories by means of a
  Riemann-Hilbert approach and the canonical Wiener-Hopf factorisation of c
 ertain matrix functions called monodromy matrices\, and we describe other 
 types of factorisation from which explicit solutions can be constructed in
  a similar manner. Examples of applications include Kasner\, Einstein-Rose
 n wave and gravitational pulse wave solutions.
