DESCRIPTION:Recent speculations for the upcoming 6G push the 5G performanc
e indicators to unprecedented\nlevels\, envisioning THz frequency bands\,
devices with embedded sensing capabilities\, and native artificial\nintell
igence. These challenging features are expected to become a reality around
2030 and with a strong green\nfootprint. In this talk\, we will elaborate
around the emerging technology of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces\nwh
ich is provisioned as the enabler of smart wireless environments\, offerin
 g a highly scalable\, low-cost\,\nhardware-efficient\, and almost energy-n
eutral solution for the dynamic control of the propagation of\nelectromagn
etic signals\, as well as\, very recently\, their transmission and recepti
on. We will discuss their\nevolution from programmable reflecting metamate
rials to connected computational- and power-autonomous\nhybrid metasurface
s as well as metasurface-based holographic MIMO transceivers\, emphasising
on their state of-the-art configuration approaches and their imminent app
 lications for communications\, localisation\, sensing\,\nand their integra
