DESCRIPTION:Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems\, electric vehicles (EVs)\, an
d electrical storage devices are all now available off-the-shelf. Neverthe
less\, choosing how many solar panels to install\, how to place them\, and
how much storage to buy are costly--yet poorly understood—decisions. Mo
reover\, there is little understanding of the impact of EVs on sizing. Thi
s is due to the inherent variability of all three processes: solar generat
ion\, residential load\, and EV arrivals and departures. In this talk\, I
will outline the problem\, why it is challenging\, and recent breakthrough
s in my research group in placement\, sizing\, and operation algorithms th
at are theoretically well-grounded yet applicable in practice.\n\nSrinivas
an Keshav is the Robert Sansom Professor of Computer Science in the Depart
ment of Computer Science and Technology at the University of Cambridge. Hi
s interests lie broadly at the intersection of computer science and sustai
nability. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of C
alifornia\, Berkeley in 1991 and was subsequently employed at AT&T Bell La
bs and Cornell University. Most recently\, he was a Professor at the Unive
rsity of Waterloo in Canada. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada
\, Association for Computing Machinery\, and the Institute of Electrical a
nd Electronic Engineers\, and a Distinguished Alumnus of the Indian Instit
 ute of Technology\, Delhi.
