DESCRIPTION:The 3C surveys have enabled important discoveries in the study
of extragalactic radio sources. Radio galaxies\, which are black hole-dri
ven objects\, are the dominant class of extragalactic radio sources\, that
have extreme effects on their surroundings. These effects lead to consequ
ences to galaxy evolution over cosmic time\, and so it is important to und
erstand their energetics and dynamics. I present recent work on 3C radio
galaxies observed with LOFAR\, a 150 MHz radio telescope capable of 0.3" i
mages\, comparable in resolution to the Hubble Space Telescope. Our curren
t studies support the idea that our basic understanding of radio galaxies
requires refinement\, in preparation for the SKA era when we will observe
every radio galaxy out to high redshift.
